EFT - Emotionally Focused Therapy

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a helpful and proven approach to therapy that focuses on emotions and relationships. It is rooted in attachment theory and supports you to create strong and positive connections with yourself and others by understanding and changing negative patterns in how you think and interact.

EFT is effective for individuals, couples, and families. It has been proven to be effective for individuals suffering from depression, trauma (especially childhood abuse or neglect), couples in conflict and distress, interpersonal issues, including unresolved feelings toward past significant others and complicated grief.

To thrive, it's crucial to understand and effectively use our emotions. However, if we've developed a habit of distrusting, ignoring, fearing, or avoiding our emotions, we miss out on valuable insights about ourselves, making it challenging to respond effectively. Early experiences of repeated invalidation, abuse, or trauma can lead to persistent, troublesome emotions that require transformation. Emotion-focused therapists support you in establishing a positive connection with your experiences (feelings, memories, thoughts, bodily responses). This process facilitates the shift from unhealthy emotional states, helps you tap into adaptive internal resources, and enables you to live more fully in the present.

Making Space Psychotherapy is a community of Registered Psychotherapists dedicated to a common focus — to continually make space for, learn about and support the healing of individual, family and collective trauma in our local community and beyond.

The land on which our clinics operate have been the traditional land of the Erie, Neutral, Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee, and Mississaugas of the Credit for thousands of years. Making Space Psychotherapy and its staff are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.  We also acknowledge and have gratitude for the elements of our work in various modalities that come from ancient and Indigenous ways of knowing and healing.
